Covid-19: Former Ghanaian President, Rawlings, Dies

Jerry Rawlings, former President of Ghana died of covid-19 related health problem at the age of 73, based on multiple reports coming directly from Ghanaian media.

The former president had earlier buried his mother like a month ago before he suffered the death himself.

Jerry Rawlings, who is one of the most respected African leaders, he was a military leader in Ghana which later became a prominent politician that ruled Ghana from 1981 to 2001.

The former President initially came to power in Ghana as a flight lieutenant of the Ghana Air Force following a coup d’état in 1979.

Before that, he had led an unsuccessful coup attempt played against the ruling military government on 15th of May 1979, which happened five weeks to the scheduled democratic elections.

He was until his death, the African Union envoy to Somalia.

Dele Momodu, who was a former Nigerian Presidential candidate and media mogul, who is closely linked to the Ghanaian Presidency, confirmed the death of Rawlings on Twitter by tweeting:

“The saddest news of this year. My God. Former President Jerry John Rawlings of Ghana has passed on. I’m completely devastated. Good night, an African hero.”
